Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is Elton Johns best selling studio album with over 30,000,000 units worldwide and in Rolling Stones list of the top 100 albums of all time. The cover illustration pictures Elton walking into a poster tacked to the side of a building. There is a lot going on in this illustration so when I proceeded to recreate it in thread I wanted a few elements to stand out, Elton being one of them. I started by stitching the background and poster itself with over 50 different colors of rayon thread. When it came to Elton, I created him as a patch and then mounted him in relief over the background. He truly stands out in this fashion and makes him appear separate from the background. I also stitched the title of the album as a patch. This was the first album that I employed the use of patches in, now I use the technique in many different ways.
