This is the album that tops most lists as the greatest album of all time. The Beatle’s Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is a concept album released in 1967, it was the 8th album by the Fab Four and the concept is based on the fictitious Sgt. Peppers Band. The album is innovative in its recording techniques and studio experimentation. Since the Beatles, at this point stopped touring they were free to experiment in the studio without having to worry about reproducing the tracks live. This was the first album that I wanted to embroider for this series but it wasn’t the first I did. The reason is the detail in the cover. The cover features the Beatles in psychedelic band uniforms surrounded by a collaged audience of famous people, standing in front of a grave with the Beatles spelled out in flowers, a lot of detail for thread. Every time I picked it up I out it back down. When creating a large installation for a client I needed a large vibrant piece. So I picked up the album again. This time I flipped it open and decided to do the centerfold. The centerfold features all 4 of the Beatles from the shoulders up, in their uniforms on top of a yellow background. I started by stitching a geometric pattern in yellow thread over the background to give the solid area texture and then I embroidered the Beatles in over 75 colors of wool thread using free motion stitches in a variety of stitch lengths. The finished piece is perfect for any Beatles fan and an amazing addition to any collection.
