I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This album was the first I had purchased by Sammy Hagar. This album came out a few years before he joined Van Halen and before his biggest hit “I Can’t Drive 55.” This was selected as a custom piece from one of my major collectors. The album cover features Sammy rocking out inside of a mouth with red lips being the prominent feature of the album. I started by stitching Sammy using about 20 colors of thread in an abstract stitch style. I then used red glitter fabric as an appliqué for the lips and added shading on top of the lips in multiple colors to accent the details in the lips. The logo and album title were created as patches and mounted at the end.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
