I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. Perhaps one the biggest debut albums of all time. There is something about a debut album that gets me excited. The artist is giving everything to get their songs out, they often have a lifetime of ideas and are putting them all on the line with a debut album. Essentially, they will make it or break it with this one shot. I have created quite a few debut albums in this album series; Jimi Hendrix, Guns N Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sex Pistols, all amazing debut albums. For Amy Winehouse I wanted to add a few special details. I started by stitching tonal black hearts in yarn over the stark black background and then for Amy herself sitting in the tub I used over 40 colors of rayon thread to get all of the details in her face and hair. The piece was finished with a large logo patch that was embroidered and then added to the album at the end.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
