I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. When you listen to a David Bowie album you never knew what to expect and it was always a surprise. Constantly changing and exploring new genres and sounds is how I would categorize Bowie. Bowie was the ultimate chameleon when it came to artistic risks. Heroes is one of my favorite Bowie albums and the second one that I created in this series. I wanted to emulate Bowie and experiment on this piece. The embroidery is created using a fractal stitching technique where I take the colors of the piece and explode them into digital shapes and then embroider them. The end result is a subtle shift in color and form of the stitches. The title of the album was created as a patch and mounted on as the last step.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
