I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. Cinderella’s Long Cold Winter was a more blues-based album than its predecessor. This was always my favorite album from Tom Keifer and Cinderella. I remember seeing them live when they opened for Bon Jovi on the Slippery When Wet tour. The graphics for this album are minimal. The Cinderella logo is featured in gradient purple over a stark white background. The only other detail in the album is the album title in purple script. Since this album is essentially a blank canvas I wanted to have fun with it, I started by stitching swirling free motion lines using white yarn. The swirls gave movement to the plain background. I then added a few free standing butterflies stitched in shades of purple and white. The logo and album title were created as patches using rayon thread and mounted onto the album.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
