I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This an amazing album by Latin American sensation J Balvin. I stumbled upon this album when I was looking for records to create for my show during Basel week in Miami. So many of the albums that I had done at that point were black and white or more somber in tone so I needed a few bright albums to brighten the installation wall. This album is very stark in appearance with a bright orange background and a pair of google eyes. I digitized and embroidered the album in neon orange yarn. The pattern was derived from the zig zag graphics on the inside of the album and I created the eyes as patches and mounted them onto the album.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
