The most exciting part of working on this series is the memories the albums bring back and the conversations they start. I remember buying the Joshua tree album when it was released in 1987, I was a junior in high school and U2 was poised to explode. They had already released a few very successful albums, but The Joshua Tree turned them into superstars. The concept of the album was based on America, both mythical and real. I also remember seeing them in concert during this tour and being blown away by the performance. This album was a commission request and it features the group in the center third of the album photographed in the desert in black and white with the rest of the album being in black. Since the band is Irish I embroidered Celtic knot borders along the black areas of the album in tonal black, you won’t notice them at first but as you look closer you will see them appear. The photograph was embroidered using super flat nylon thread in an abstract photographic style using very small stitches. The matte thread really emphasizes the flatness of the photograph. The bands name and album title were created as patches and applied last.
