I hand-selected each album then set out to embroider them. To make the art, each thread must be hand-digitized using digital drawing tools on a scan of the actual album as a backdrop. Every stitch is drawn by hand, one at a time. The embroidery process itself is the most interesting and has to be seen to believe. This was one of my favorites in the series to create. The cover makes no mention of the band or the title of the album, it is simply a photograph of a hand crushing an egg. I wanted to mimic different textures with this album cover so I started by stitching the arm and hand using multiple shades of rayon and polyester thread. I then used glitter fabric appliqués for the egg and for the fingernails. The fabric was stitched and then laser cut directly on the album. To represent the exploding egg I appliquéd clear vinyl onto the cover and embellished it with more thread. The clear material added further dimension to this outstanding album cover by the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's.
The albums take up to 8 hours to embroider and can contain over 200,000 stitches. The series is created and designed to be hung together so you can add to your installation wall as you discover new pieces I create. Each of the albums comes with a signed certificate and is framed in acrylic and measures 12" x 12" x 2".
